Well, C64MINI seems to use VICE 2.4, there have been some improvements in drive emulation since then, so no real surprise there. I'll take your word for it that it'll work from tape :)

The c64 mini has a mode called use accurate disk drive ( see https://www.thec64minizone.com/cjm-configuration-file-tool/ )

However this didn't work with previous versions.

This version is true stand alone, can be loaded from tape or cartridge too. There are no more drive functions or track-sector loading. The highscore is loaded and saved with kernel routines to the same device that the game was loaded. Admittedly, not tested tape.... But feel free to try.

Indeed, even when extracting the prg, turning TDE off and setting all drives to 'None' and loading the via monitor from the host OS, it works.

Edit: so the C64MINI has TDE off then?
