Nice picture trick, converting one half into sprites.

There is another way as well. You could split $d016 in the middle and make the picture go bounce both ways. Possibly the middle char will look buggy due to $D016 split timing, so it need to be 1 sprite overlay to mask (or copy correct chardata into the sprite memory) to get idential trick as with 8 sprites. Also require to compress a 3 colour bitmap ito charset. If lots of repeating data you can sqeeze a bitmap into a fontbank depending on image used.
