Just switching between 2 sets of coordinates every frame, which is why it flashes so much.

The 'stretch' is just setting $d017 to $ff before displaying the sprites and $00 during display.

In an emulator, try changing $08bf to $00 :)

Sprite stretching from 1986!? :-O
The scroll and the stretching effect is quite smooth in overall, cool one.
