Interestingly, there was a similar game released for the MSX recently, allegedly inspired by Canabalt: http://www.msx.org/MSXdev09-8-Stray-Cat.newspost5301.html

Really fun, too! If the MSX can...

Damn it, Jammer! :)
I could've released this half a year ago...

@Paulko64: I have a finished version of Canabalt lying around, only waiting for music. Shouldn't you be working on VVVVVV? :)

Since Jammer is M.I.A, I'm looking for someone else to do a SID conversion of the Canabalt theme: http://galway.c64.org/~sid/canabalt_music.mp3
Needs to fit into $1000-$1fff, single-speed and the first 20 seconds have to be loopable.

Any takers? Linus, are you still interested?

Mr SID - just out of curiosity I'd be interested in seeing what you've done and how it compares to Paulko64's 16KB version (planned for a cartridge release later this year). Did you use all the original assets, or create your own gfx? Does Adam Atomic know about your version?

Post up some pics man. ;)

@Paulko64 - don't lose motivation just because someone else has already been working on a conversion! ;)

I don't really do previews or screenshots. I hate announcing stuff before it's done. Makes it incredibly hard to finish it. Also means that I sometimes get people duplicating what I do.

Graphics I made myself by re-using Adam's work where possible, but changing them where necessary. Looks very similar to Paulko's version, but the scale is different. I considered downsizing it to 16KB for the compo actually. It's currently about 24KB but that includes intro, title screen, highscore logic and saving, etc...
I haven't contacted Adam yet, mostly because I didn't want to show him something that's not finished.

Ah, the duplication of efforts to convert the game is a shame in this case though... I expect you're both a bit annoyed really.

Looks like we'll end up with two C64 conversions of Canabalt - but I suppose that's not *such* a bad thing ;)

True. It's too late to keep it secret now anyway:

I see what you mean about the different scale - you're using a smaller vertical screen size so as to maintain a similar letter-box profile of the original. Nice screens though mate - best of luck in getting it finished. Will be interesting to see how the two versions compare :)

Mr SID, this indeed seems to be a bit of a bummer...

Anyway, I was also looking for someone to convert the Canabalt tune to a SID-version. Ne7 already indicated that he was interested, but I haven't seen anything yet though...

Paul - who did the music in the current preview? I thought it was pretty good to be honest mate, and there's nothing wrong with a C64 version having an original score ;)

Also, comparing Mr SID's version to yours. At the moment it seems the core scaling differences are:

Paul's version has higher ceilings in the internal areas, making jumping into buildings easier (like the original). In fact, Paul's version seems to have correct 1:1 scaling with regard to the building windows and such.

Mr SID's has more acurate obstruction sizes. Paul's are the same size as the Canabalt runner, whereas SID's are closer to the original.

I wonder how these differences effect gameplay?

SID, I see the birds and window smashes are in your version, but did you also manage to add the jet, falling bombs, falling buildings, etc? What features from the original weren't possible to squeeze in? Is your version NTSC compatiple? Adam seems very enthusiastic about being able to play the C64 version on his machine, and he's based in the US...

James,

The current music in my version is actually one of the tunes from Thrustburst (you know that the tunes from Thurstburst are actually in goattracker format?). I agree that this tune fits the action quite well. However, I have not been able to contact Ghormak to ask if he's ok with using this tune...

Regarding the size of the boxes. I also saw that the objects seem to be somewhat large in my version, however I converted the objects pixel by pixel. It seems the objects have a different scaling then...

PaulKo64

Only the first hallway has a lower ceiling, the others are much higher to make jumping into them as easy or as hard as in the original. Also the heights are randomized, like everything else.

I didn't add the jet, the falling buildings and the big billboard. I pixelled the crane to run on, but didn't put it in yet.
I've also added the parallax girders in the foreground.

My version doesn't work on NTSC, there's just not enough rastertime left to make it work. Would need some serious optimization and fixing work.

Thrustburst! Of course - I thought I recognised that track :)

Ghormak you say?

Hehe - well lucky for you Paul, I know his mate ptoing very well (who also worked on Thrustburst). I'll send him a message tonight and get him in touch with you. Ammusingly, I've already sent ptoing a link to the video so he may know already!

Mr SID - thanks for the info man. I think the falling buildings are important to add. I always hated those bombs that turn you into a fine mist from the original - very hard to avoid on the original, and probably impossible to jump over on the C64's narrower screen!

The jet is worth adding to give the player a sense of progress (doesn't it fly across the screen every 500 or 1000 meters or something?)

I still stand by my guns that a NTSC version is worth pushing for. Adam's very interested in this conversion, and it would be great if it was available for the NTSC market.

All,

As hyping your new c64 game a week before release seems to be hip these days, watch out on the 1st of december:

Cool. :)
I'm probably gonna release my version a bit earlier than that. Not trying to steal your thunder or anything. It was really planned for April this year, but the music delayed it so much that I decided to continue work on PoP. Just want to get it out now...
