Event id #3244 : Intro Creation Competition 2022

<Post edited by TheRyk on 14/2-2023 23:59>

Now coders, warm your fingers, winter's coming :)

Quoting Didi in 2021 discussion
...
@ThRyk: Feel free to organize something different for a change. I may participate.

OK, so I grab the torch and seize the chance to make some changes. Main new thing is, we want to do 8K/2K/1K this time, because
Quoting Krill
Quoting TheRyk
16K is boring :)
I concur. That's practically unrestricted. =)

and 4K has been done very often over the years.

Stricter limits, but no more care about "RAM footprints", so we also need no discussion about whether this or that part of RAM/IO/ZP count or not etc. -> Crunched (or not crunched, your decision) file size matters but nothing else.

obligatory RULES for ALL categories
- works on a vanilla C64 (PAL standard) without any extensions
- 1 part intro, however, fade-ins and fade-outs are allowed
- shows at least one logo
- displays a changing/moving text message (e.g. scrolltext, text fading in/out...)
- has to be interruptable by SPACE
- no ripped or vastly recycled code; ripped gfx/music is allowed
- not released before entering the competition
- executable format startable with RUN
NEW! Using other VIC-Banks than %11 is forbidden, so don't use RAM higher than $3FFF (IO and Vectors in page $FF are ok).
<- reaction on complaints

8K
- crunched range is $0801 till maximum $27ff
- contains music
- is linked to this competition as "C64 Fast Intro" entry (lacking a more fitting category)

2K
- crunched range is $0801 till maximum $0fff
- is linked to this competition as "C64 2K Game" entry (lacking a more fitting category)

1K
- crunched range is $0801 till maximum $0bff
- is linked to this competition as "C64 1K Intro" entry

NEW crack-your-grinch-head-category
- get this .prg file and link it at $2000 (ranges till $CFFF)
https://csdb.dk/release/download.php?id=278763
e.g. in ACME
*= $2000
   !bin "linkthis.prg",,2

- $2000-$CFFF must be the same before RUN and after SPACE press
- link your file to this competition as "C64 WiLD Demo" entry

More rules/info

Maximum 2 entries per participant and category, i.e. max. 6 altogether.
However, entries are allowed to be withdrawn from the compo in favour of new entries until deadline.
Deadline for entry submission is 29th Jan 2023, 23:59:59 CET.

Then voting runs from 14th Feb 2023 till Feb 28th 23:59:59 CET.
CSDb votes will NOT decide the result, there will be some half-smart alternative external solution,
anyone with a CSDb account will be granted access to voting, self-votes will be eliminated.

No material prizes can be won, though, apart from eternal fame and the mere fun of competing.

Have fun!
Cheers
Ryk

PS: I reserve the right to disqualify entries for violating competition rules or human rights, but as I value freedom of speech and art highly, this will hopefully not be necessary; just follow the rules, use common sense and don't be a dick, pretty please.

Snailmail disks (new old stock, freshly formatted and Zoom-Floppy-written, as close 2 brandnew as you can get nowadays) went to the letterbox in Holstein yesterday high noon
(sorry 4 all the delay)
and the first one arrived in Frankfurt this morning \o/ <- so much for snailmail, fankly, I can't blame the postmen, only my personal real life, work sux, family and slacker issues like procrastinating BCC#17 orga -hehe- kept me from being some 6 weeks faster

Originally, I said the fastest 5 voters, but as only 7 altogether claimed a disk,
I sent one to each of these 7 - each with an individual Easter egg.

Non-Germans, be aware, I maybe broke international law (again, what else could you expect from an evil pirate)...
"Deutsche Post" Homepage told me on their stamps shop homepage:
shipping other items than "documents" as "international letter" was forbidden.
The right way to do it was as parcel (probably including customs declaration and whatnot)
- which would have been around 60 € to Australia... <- which I found slightly over the top compared to 3,70 € for intl letter.
So I just decided a 5,25" disk _IS_ a document. :D

Why do I tell you this?
Well, Australian customs offices are so notorious that TV docu-soaps are broadcast in Europe about them x-raying and flame-thrower-destroying stuff that's not according to whatever rules...
So my sending disks as letter might result in guys in Austria, Australia and Denmark not getting their sending or being told to pick it up at some customs office
<- In that case, don't do that, let the customs officers have some fun with it, just contact me, I'll find another solution, either I email you the images or I pass new envelopes to the next Australian, Austrian or Dane I meet at the X Party.

Cheers

@TheRyk:
Thank you for all the effort you put into organizing this compo. Perfectly organized from the beginning to the end!

Voting was so much fun and the same goes for the presentation of the compo results. Absolutely awesome!

Also, receiving a disk via snail mail nowadays feels absolutely thrilling! Thank you! But "Next time" please use cardboards on both sides of the disk like an old-school swapper! ;-) Disk arrived in perfect state, though!

Thanks!

@shocker: Great it arrived safe and sound. For the international sendings, esp the one to Australia, I used cardboard envelopes, for German sendings I just crossed my fingers the paper might survive, but you definetely got a point there :)

Don't forget: Stamps back! ;-)

Normally: YES

BRAVE NEW WORLD: These so-called "stamps" you can buy online and print... /o\ what you get is some tiny QR-Code, you can add a piccie but only if you don't add the address /o\ then I went for no piccie but yes address and the PDF got all special chars wrong... I could understand (not excuse) if for some reason my .TXT editor-typed addresses might have not fit into some lame German Post not-really-unicode... BUT I got really disappointed when stuff like "ÖSTERREICH" which I did not type but select via "select country" drop-down ON THE POST HOMEPAGE resulted in "?STERREICH"...

Bottom line: No stamps back this time, these so-called "stamps" (even if the QR-Code would allow using them twice) deserve nothing else after sending arrived than being burnt with hellfire :)
